H.264 vs H.265: Choose the Codec Your Receivers Can Decode

H.264 (AVC) is the compatibility champion: it decodes on virtually every set-top box, TV and software player in service, which makes it the safe default for replacement projects and mixed receiver fleets. H.265 (HEVC) is roughly twice as efficient — in practical terms, comparable picture quality at about half the bitrate of H.264 — but it demands newer decoding hardware on the receiving end.
The right answer depends on your delivery path and your receiver base. If you are feeding existing H.264 set-top boxes, H.265 saves nothing until those boxes are replaced. If you are building a greenfield IPTV network with modern receivers, or paying for every megabit you transport, H.265 usually wins on operating cost. SDI vs HDMI: Match the Input to the Source

HDMI is where most consumer and semi-professional sources live — set-top boxes, media players and hotel content servers. It is inexpensive and ubiquitous, but it is not designed for long cable runs, and sources without proper audio embedding can create lip-sync headaches.
The practical rule: if the source is close and consumer-grade, HDMI is usually fine. If you are wiring a broadcast rack or depend on reliable audio sync, prefer SDI. If your budget allows, choose an encoder that accepts both, so you are not locked into one source type as your content evolves.
Channel Density, Output Format and Total Cost
An encoder's channel count changes both rack cost and operating cost. A single-channel unit is simple to troubleshoot and easy to keep as a spare; a multi-channel encoder can put four, eight or more channels in one rack unit, cutting per-channel price and power consumption. For a 12-channel hotel or campus system, one multi-channel encoder usually beats a wall of single-channel boxes on cost per channel — though you lose per-channel redundancy, so keep a spare on site.
Output matters just as much. Most modern encoders output MPEG-TS over IP (UDP/RTP, unicast or multicast), which feeds directly into multiplexers, IP gateways and QAM or OFDM modulators. Some also carry ASI for legacy distribution. Check that the output protocol matches what the rest of your headend expects before you buy.
Finally, look beyond the spec sheet. Ask about firmware update policy, remote management (web-based control and SNMP make a real difference in daily operation), and what the warranty actually covers.
